Clary Sage (Bulgaria)

BOTANICAL PORTRAIT Clary Sage is a small bush that grows almost 3 ft high. It has very hairy leaves and the flowers are small with a kind of bluish-purple color. SOURCE Clary Sage is native to the Northern Mediterranean area of Europe, some areas of Africa and parts of Central Asia.ORIGIN Clary Sage seeds were originally used to help remove foreign objects from the eye as it was said to attract the object and make it easier to remove. This was documented in 1653 and caused the plant to be nicknamed the "Clear-Eye" plant. PRINCIPLE CONSTITUENTS Clary Sage's chemical makes up consists of 52.9% Linalyl Acetate. The rest of the oil is made up of other trace chemicals. HISTORY Clary Sage is derived from the Latin Word Claris meaning clear. In the Middle Ages, Clary Sage was called the "Eye of Christ" and was an esteemed medicine. Clary Sage was used as a medicine through the 16th century and at one point was used in England as a replacement for hops when brewing beer.
